Self-Limited Illnesses and Self-Care

Self-limited illnesses are conditions that improve on their own as the body’s immune system works to fight them off. These illnesses typically do not require a visit with a medical provider and are often described as needing to “run their course.” While they resolve naturally, they can still be contagious and may cause significant discomfort.

Management of self-limited illnesses focuses on caring for symptoms at home, preventing the spread to others, and knowing when it’s appropriate to seek medical attention.

Self-care also includes attending to mental and emotional health. Students may occasionally require a brief period of time dedicated to psychological recovery and wellness. Restorative activities that promote both mental and physical health are encouraged. Students should seek additional support if emotional symptoms persist or interfere with daily functioning.

Self-Care Note

If you believe you have a self-limiting illness and need to miss a class, event, or activity, you may complete a self-care note. This note helps you communicate your absence to instructors, supervisors, or other relevant parties. Please be aware that submitting a self-care note does not automatically excuse your absence. All decisions regarding make-up work, assignments, and class participation are determined solely by the instructor. Students are responsible for providing this documentation directly to their professors.

Falsifying information on a self-care note is a violation of the Loyola University Honor Code and may result in referral to Office of Student Integrity and Restorative Justice Practices.

Please Note – This form is not intended for students whose absences are related to a disability and who have been approved by the Office of Disability and Accessibility Services (DAS) for attendance policy modifications. If you have a documented disability that includes random or cyclical acute episodes that may affect your ability to attend class, you are encouraged to register with DAS to receive appropriate accomodation.
