Desvan Moody, School Counseling Alum, Awarded NCAN Fellowship
Desvan Moody, a star graduate from the Loyola University Maryland School Counseling Program has been recently selected for the 2nd Cohort of the National College Attainment Network's Leading for Equity Fellowship.
Desvan Moody is currently the associate director of the KIPP Forward program in Baltimore, MD; he also worked as a college and career counselor in Baltimore public schools. He is an alumnus of the Loyola University Maryland School Counseling Program. Devan's thesis in his master's program focused on a school counselor's role in supporting transgender and gender creative students in single-sex institutions. Devan's time at Loyola provided him with a connection with Dr. Qi Shi, the director of the Center for Equity, Leadership, and Social Justice in Education. The two worked together on research and published a peer-reviewed article in the flagship journal of the American School Counseling Association. This article was presented at the Evidence-Based School Counseling Conference in 2022. The information for the collaboration with Desvan and Dr. Shi came from Desvan's opportunity to work virtually with English Language Learner (ELL) students at the Esperanza center during the pandemic. After graduating from Loyola University Maryland, Desvan leaves with memberships from the Counseling Honor Society and the Jesuit Honor Society.
National College Attainment Network (NCAN)
NCAN's mission is to build, strengthen, and empower communities and stakeholders to close equity gaps in post-secondary attainment for all students.
NCAN was a part of the push to raise the amount of the Pell Grant. This raise helped students gain more opportunities to get into post-secondary education.
Desvan's Connection to NCAN
Desvan has been a part of the NCAN organization for almost 6-years as a general member. He joined NCAN because his career began as an educator admission counselor at private liberal arts colleges. While Devan worked with the colleges, he noticed gaps in their access, attainment, persistence, and equity of passageways that students engaged with from grades K through 12. Desvan later applied to NCAN's Leading For Equity Fellowship. The NCAN fellowship expands the number of leaders of color in the college field. Desvan is learning what it takes to move up in the college field as a person of color. Desvan states that being a part of NCAN gives him visibility, confidence, and community.
Desvan makes a statement in the NCAN fellowship by being the first to come out of Baltimore. This accomplishment makes clear why Baltimore is a place to find future leaders. Desvan's connection to Baltimore is another reason he joined NCAN's fellowship. Desvan is putting Baltimore on the map for secondary education and future leadership.
