Planning for Fall 2020: Classroom Trial Sessions

The Committee for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning invites you to workshop sessions on Tuesday, August 11^th that will allow you to experience the new socially distanced classrooms. Experiencing a classroom in-person or remotely with new seat capacity and technology should help all those attending think about the best ways to use their classroom time as well as challenges that may need to be overcome in the classroom.

Planning an in-person workshop before the start of the semester and during the pandemic required extra work from many people. The CETL would like to thank Academic Affairs, the Academic Continuity Working Group, OTS, Event Services, and Facilities among other university offices for all their help in creating this opportunity for faculty.

Due to social-distancing guidelines, registration is required. Using the link, you may sign up to attend one classroom workshop, either in person or remotely through Zoom. (We must restrict registration for a single session due to space constraints; you may sign up for the waitlist for additional sessions, and you will be added if space allows.)

During each session, faculty colleagues will host brief classroom activities to demonstrate classroom functionality. Attendees will be able to experience the classroom from either the in-classroom student perspective or from the remote learner perspective via Zoom. The example classrooms will have socially-distanced seating and will also be equipped with the new classroom technology available for the fall semester (mobile technology carts or Pan-Tilt-Zoom [PTZ] cameras). Three 1-hour sessions will be offered in each of 5 example classrooms. Sessions will be recorded for those not able to attend.

Sessions will be held from 9:00-10:00 AM, 10:10-11:10AM, and 11:20AM-12:20PM in the following classrooms:

Maryland Hall 241 (capacity 10 students)
Maryland Hall 342 (capacity 10 students)
Maryland Hall 343 (capacity 10 students)
The Study (capacity 32 students)
McGuire Hall West (capacity 18 students)

Register on Eventbrite to attend. Register for a single session only. Sign up for the waitlist if you would like to attend an additional session. If attending through Zoom, you will receive a Zoom link the day before the workshop.

Anyone attending a classroom session on campus will need to complete steps related to COVID-19 training and symptom checking:

Complete the university approved COVID-19 Training Course offered by HR before coming to campus. (Information for this training was sent by HR on 7/6/20 in an e-mail titled ‘Faculty, Staff, and Administrator – Required Return to Campus Training, GetVitalCheck Welcome Letter.’)
Monitor symptoms prior to the workshop and only attend if you receive the clear pass from getVitalcheck on the morning of the workshop.
You must be enrolled in getVitalcheck and pass the survey on Aug. 11 in order to be allowed to attend the workshop. You will be enrolled by registering for this event and should receive messaging starting August 10th.
All members of the Loyola community must wear cloth face coverings while on campus whether inside or outside. Please remember to bring a mask and wear it all times while on campus for the workshop. We will also be maintaining 6 ft of social distancing inside and outside of the classrooms while on campus.

In addition to the summer workshop sessions, the CETL is also currently creating a Teams site that will allow university members to share resources and ideas related to pedagogy for the Fall 2020 semester and beyond. This site will also be a great location to continue the conversation about the ideas and information discussed within the summer workshops.
