McGuire Scholars Program for Undergraduate Study 

Loyola University Maryland’s tuition remission program is one of the most valuable benefits offered to employees, particularly those interested in earning an undergraduate degree. However, many employees hesitate to take advantage of this opportunity because they feel their previous educational experiences have not fully prepared them for college-level coursework.

The McGuire Scholars Program is designed to bridge that gap, providing Loyola employees with the resources and support needed to gain admission to Loyola’s undergraduate programs and thrive as students. The program is named after Father Daniel McGuire, S.J., who dedicated himself to helping students remain at Loyola through financial assistance and other support.

Getting Started

Prospective McGuire Scholars are encouraged to meet with the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, to discuss how a Loyola degree can support their personal and professional goals. During this meeting, applicants receive guidance on how to prepare to enroll in undergraduate courses at Loyola.  

 
Program Benefits

McGuire Scholars receive a range of support services throughout their academic journey, including:

• Admissions Support – Scholars work with admissions counselors and writing center tutors to navigate the Loyola admissions process.
• Academic and Organizational Coaching – Scholars have access to one-on-one coaching to help with study skills, time management, and coursework, starting during the application process and continuing throughout their studies.
• Academic Support – Scholars have full access online and in-person resources covering essential academic skills in reading, writing, mathematics, and computer literacy.

Your Academic Pathway

Anyone interested in McGuire Scholars is encouraged to set up a meeting with Mike Puma, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, to set goals and discuss their potential academic pathway. Scholars can connect with Meredith Good, Associate Director of Transfer and Special Population in the office of Undergraduate Admission, to begin the process of enrolling in their chosen path of study. The Office of People and Culture will advise on how to utilize eligible tuition remission benefits.

Once you have begun taking classes, Scholars will continue to receive ongoing support as they progress toward their degree. They are assigned advisors and gain access to a variety of academic and community resources, including the Loyola/Notre Dame Library, faculty mentorship and relationship-building, Cultural and Service-Learning opportunities, Spirituality and campus engagement activities and The Rizzo Career Center. 

Building Community

To foster a sense of belonging and support, McGuire Scholars participate in quarterly Lunch and Learn sessions, where they can connect with fellow scholars and learn more about the resources available to them as Loyola students.
