Getting Started
Apply for Military Benefits
Prior to being certified at Loyola, you must first apply for GI Bill® education benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Loyola University Maryland participates in the following VA education benefit programs. There are several types of benefits, so you should first review the various offerings on the GI Bill® website to determine which program you may be eligible for. Veterans, service members, and qualified family members must apply and be approved for education benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA). Applications are designed to obtain data necessary to determine eligibility for educational assistance benefits for particular educational objectives. The application and required forms vary according to the type of benefits and the circumstances.
For comprehensive assistance with the application process, you can call the VA at 1-888-442-4551 or email your inquiry through the Ask VA (AVA) portal. The VA will review your application and issue you a Certificate of Eligibility letter, which confirms your type of benefit, the number of months of benefits remaining, and the date benefits expire.
Provide a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility to your SCO
After the DVA has received the application and all necessary supporting documents, the claim will be processed and a file (claim) number established (usually the veteran's social security number). Veterans and eligible dependents will receive notification of this action in the form of a Certificate of Eligibility. The certificate will indicate the type of benefit, the number of months of benefits remaining, and the date benefits exhaust. Please share a copy of your Certificate of Eligibility with your School Certifying Official.

Consider Tuition Assistance
Loyola University Maryland has signed the Department of Defense Memorandum of Understanding which allows Loyola to participate in Tuition Assistance (TA). TA is authorized for active duty and reservists by a branch of service. Each service has its own portal for the student to apply for TA and receive a TA Authorization form. Tuition Assistance provides financial support to eligible service members for voluntary, off-duty education, supporting both professional advancement and personal development. Service members should speak with their Educational Services Officer (ESO) or their counselor within their Military Service. Loyola’s participation in this program reinforces our commitment to being a military-friendly institution and expands access to transformative Jesuit education for those who serve.

Transfer Credits
The Academic Advising and Support Center (AASC) and department chairs are responsible for reviewing undergraduate transfer credits. Information on student transfer requirements is located on the AASC website.
Incoming graduate students who would like prior credit reviewed for transfer consideration will have an opportunity to do so after they have been admitted and have accepted Loyola University Maryland's offer of admission, usually within their first semester. Graduate level transfer credit is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
Joint Services Transcripts
Loyola University Maryland reviews the Joint Services Transcript (JST) and awards credit for ACE recommendations where applicable to undergraduate programs. To have ACE recommendations evaluated for credit at Loyola University Maryland, students must submit their official JST. These credits are included in Loyola's advanced placement and other test achievement policies that limit students to a maximum of 30 credits.
